BUSINESS COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

Lindsey Frerking, Instructor
lfrerking@lexington.k12.mo.us

Business Computer Technology has been designed to help you learn to operate computers and software programs efficiently. Technical proficiency is one of the top skills required of new and existing employees in most companies today.

Students are provided with realistic training on some of the most sophisticated business equipment available in a learning environment designed to simulate a modern business-like atmosphere. Popular software packages in word processing, database, spreadsheet, voice recognition, web page design, and desktop publishing are thoroughly covered along with other skills, information, and attitudes needed to be confident, professional, and successful in a business career.

Business Computer Technology is offered to adult students as a full-day, 9-month program.

This course is offered to juniors or seniors as a one or two-year program. High School students receive two to four high school credits each year, depending upon the number of class periods attended each day. Credit for applied communications may also be earned by high school students upon successful completion of Business Computer Technology. Interested students should see their home school counselor and the instructor for details.

Students are placed in area businesses during the last quarter of the school year to receive practical, on-the-job training. Adult students receive a certificate upon satisfactory completion of the program.

Training for performance-based certification in Microsoft Office products is included in the Business Technology Curriculum. Since most companies in Missouri use word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Access,) from the Microsoft Office Suite, the Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) exams let the employer know the computer software capabilities of the prospective employee. Passing these exams is proof that the student can use the specific program at the proficient or expert level. After the student has thoroughly studied the software application, he/she may then take the MOUS exam at an area MOUS Authorized Testing Center. Each student is responsible for the cost of the exam and for transportation to and from the Testing Center.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Business Computer Technology provides you with the opportunity to gain employment immediately upon completion of the program. You can gain skills that can be used for your own personal use or in a part-time job while continuing your education. The Kansas City MSA projects Computer Support Specialist positions will grow 66.8% by 2008.
