COMPUTER MAINTENANCE & NETWORKING

This program has been developed to address the overwhelming need for computer support personnel in business and industry.

This course offers students the opportunity to acquire skills and knowledge in computer networking, applications and support. Students work with peers and mentors from industry to design, build and maintain local and wide area Networks and provide computer training and support for staff and students. Students will have the opportunity to troubleshoot and repair computer software and hardware problems, and staff computer support. Students may be asked to travel off campus to other schools to perform computer support services during and after regular class hours.

PREREQUISITES

Basic computer applications class or demonstrated knowledge of personal computers and the ability to read and follow detailed technical instructions. Typing is strongly recommended.

A 2-year program offering up to four credits per year for junior and seniors. A full-day, one year program for adults.

Things I will learn if I select this course:

  • Design, Installation, administering and maintaining Wide and Local Area Networks.
  • Maintain, install and troubleshoot personal computers and printers.
  • Computer Applications and applications support.
  • Install and maintain network wiring.
  • Train Computer users.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills.

Industrial internship employment is possible. Students may earn up to one unit of credit if employed a minimum of 20 hours per week in a job related to their technical training.

SALARY RANGE

Computer Operators $20,000 to $28,000. Average wage $25,000 annually.
Computer Programmers $40,000 to $67,000. Average wage $50,000 annually.
Computer Programmer Aids $20,000 to $50,000. Average wage $42,000 annually.
Computer Engineers $39,000 to $72,500. Average wage $52,000 annually.
All other computer scientists $27,500 to $60,000. Average wage $45,000 annually.
