PRACTICAL NURSING

The role of the practical nurse is to provide quality care in all nursing situations with minimum and direct supervision and direction from a registered professional nurse and/or licensed physician.

OBJECTIVES

Implement nursing care and skills required of an entry-level practical nurse on an individual basis to patients in his/her care, incorporating and developing the nursing process.

Effectively communicate verbally and non-verbally with patients, patient's families, peers, supervisors and employers as to provide quality patient care and family interaction. Recognizing human dignity and cultural and ethnic diversity of each individual.

Recognize responsibility and participate, as a practical nurse, in meeting the health need of the community.

ADVANCEMENT POLICY

Lex La-Ray Technical Center has a policy whereby a student with Certified Nurses Aid credentials may request one opportunity to test without the benefit of an instructor demonstration and if success in demonstration of the fundamental skill the student may advance through that part of the training.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The following requirements must be met to apply to Lex La-Ray Technical Center Practical Nursing Program:

The applicant must:

  • Be eighteen (18) years of age at the conclusion of the one-year (12-month) Program.
  • Hold a high school diploma or grade 12 GED. Copies required.
  • Complete Lex La-Ray Technical Center Practical Nursing Program application.
  • Submit three (3) references, family members excluded.
  • Read and sign document 335.066 (1-14).
  • Physical examination required upon acceptance to Practical Nursing Program, not a prerequisite for application.
  • Background check.
  • Completed PELL SAR and have on file with school.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The candidate must achieve a passing score on the entrance test (NET). Determined by Testing Company and Admission Committee. A $50 testing fee is due at the time of testing.

Pre-Entrance Testing Dates are from February through April each year.

The top ranked 28 passing candidates are accepted as class members. The remaining applicants with passing scores are ranked in order on the alternate list.

Personal and Financial files must have the following information by May 1.

  • Program application
  • Signed 335.066 form (State of Missouri - Practical Nurse Act)
  • Copy of Birth Certificate, Social Security card and Drivers License or
  • State approved photo identification card
  • Three positive references
  • Current Physical Exam
  • Copy of High School Diploma or GED

Final decision for acceptance rests with the Admissions Committee.

Students are responsible for their own transportation. No dormitory facilities provided.
