BUILDING TRADES

The Building Trades program is designed for students interested in the building trades field and is nationally certified by the Associated General Contractors.

Building Trades make up one of the largest skill crafts in the building industry. Specialized workers have developed many customized skills in related fields.

Students receive training in rough framing, finishing, drywall application, finish trim, concrete finishing, painting, ceramic tile, plumbing and electrical wiring. Instruction is made more realistic through the actual construction of a residential home.


If attended full time, the Building Trades program takes one academic year to complete, two years if attended half time (morning or afternoon).

Apprenticeship:

If you decide the Construction Apprenticeship Tech Prep Program is for you, follow these steps:
  1. Apply and be admitted to the building trades program at Lex La-Ray.
  2. Ask your counselor how to apply for admission in a registered carpentry program and be eligible to receive advanced placement for skills learned.
  3. Meet the requirements listed below.
  4. Complete the requirements for graduation or earn a G.E.D. Make a formal application to carpenters apprenticeship program.

Requirements:
  • Complete the Lex La-Ray Technical Center program with at least a "C" (2.0 GPA) average.
  • Maintain attendance at or above the 95% of days available.
  • Attain minimum skills, as required by Lex La-Ray, your instructor and the Construction Apprenticeship Tech Prep Consortium.
  • Abstain from drug use and willingly submit to a urinalysis test at such time required by the apprenticeship program selection procedure.
  • Participate in the Transitional Training Program (TTP) second semester.

Students meeting the above criteria can begin a journeyman's apprentice ship at 55% of the going journeyman's wage, plus health and retirement benefits.

Articulated Credit:

Students who successfully complete one year of the program with a B average at Lex La-Ray may apply for articulated credit at State Fair Community College.


A Carpentry Certificate also earns advanced rank and pay in the military.

Textbook & Course Materials

Textbooks will be provided for use in the classroom at no charge to the student.
